Anne Arundel County is located right below Baltimore City and directly next to Washington D.C. making for an easy commute from anywhere in the county without all the city traffic. Of course, the county isn't immune to traffic inconveniences, it has Annapolis after all (which you can read more about on our Annapolis page), but it isn't just urban areas; Anne Arundel county has a lot of towns and communities within it's bounds. I'm here to shed some light on the rural and suburban areas of the county, and perhaps convince you that any one of these places is where you belong.

To start off, let's talk about the southern part of Anne Arundel, referred to by the locals as South County. South County is mostly rural towns with very small populations in each. Very tight knit communities where everyone knows everyone. They pride themselves on being a quiet place to settle down for anyone who appreciates their historic aesthetic. These towns boast their culinary appeal with a variety of family owned restaurants that serve many delectable dishes ranging anywhere from barbeque to seafood to locally grown produce and wine. Due to the above average schools in the area, South County is very popular with families, but it also is a great place for retirees and employed college students. Towns inside of South County are Shady Side, Tracy's Landing, Galesville, etc.

However, South County is really only half of Anne Arundel. The northern part of the county is much more suburban the rural or urban. Most towns and cities in the north sit near or next to major cities Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.. As there are so many places to live in Anne Arundel I can only tell you about a few without this getting very long winded and boring. We don't want to delay you any further from buying your new home, now do we? As such, I will provide you with what the top 4 best places to live in Anne Arundel County (according to Niche.com) has to offer.

In first place, is Crofton! Described by residents to have sparse suburban feel this town is the top most ranked. In close proximity to not only a beach, but 35 minutes away from where the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens plays means that there is no shortage of excitement in this area. For family fun there's an abundance of sports for kids, plus movie theatres, go-karts, and escape rooms. With a new high school many families are talking the opportunity to move here with their teens. But what's the appeal for teens, beside the aforementioned? Well, if you've lived in Maryland before than you've probably heard of the Ren Fest - otherwise known as the Renaissance Festival. Arguably one of the best things about living anywhere in Maryland, and now it's in your backyard!

Moving on to second place, we have Severna Park! With highly rated schools, sports programs pumping out college athletes every year, and a rural feel all it's own, Severna Park is like every movie small town you every watched. It has the tight knit neighbourhoods, easy job opportunities for teenagers, and many good restaurants. If Crofton was family fun, then Severna Park is family friendly. Residents praise the friendly nature of communities and the general population. Severna Park is also located on the Broadneck Peninsula in between the Severn River and Magothy River.

Next up, in third place, is the highly desirable Arnold! Also on the Broadneck Peninsula, Arnold has a mix of suburbia and rural living. The many small businesses, restaurants, and company that you can't find anywhere else allows you to support you neighbours. This contributes to the wonderful community atmosphere, which as one resident put "anywhere you go you'll see someone you know or even the friend of a friend." Many new housing developments are being built, and along with easy access to beaches and community parks, plus near-by elementary schools it's no wonder why so many young families are moving into town. Arnold has been described a great "starter" neighbourhood for people trying to start new families.

And last but not least, in fourth place is Odenton! Odenton is located a little further inland than the other towns on this list. It's next to Fort Meade which makes it ideal for Military families stationed there. It's main appeal is the beautiful nature, despite it having a dense suburban feel to it. The community has many outdoor activities; hiking paths, nature walks, fishing spots, and lookout points to just take in the gorgeous landscape. If you ever get tired of looking at nature, although I doubt you would, there is easy access to restaurants, shopping centres, and city life in Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington D.C.

Sadly, this is the end of my list. If none of these appeal to you there are many other amazing cities that are very similar to each of these places. Cape St. Claire along the water, Annapolis our capital, Parole, Severn, Riva, and Gambrills to name a few.
